Forest Plan Implementation
Forest Plan Overview
Chapter 3 - Management Prescriptions
Introduction
This chapter includes the complete Management Prescription for each of the 19 Land Use Designations (LUDs) used in the Forest Plan. The areas allocated to each LUD are shown on the Forest Plan map.
Each Management Prescription has the following components:
- Goals, Objectives, and Desired Condition
- Table of the Forest-wide Standards and Guidelines that apply
- LUD-specific Standards and Guidelines
LUD Groups
The 19 LUDs can be organized into four LUD groups, based on the level of development or timber harvest they allow. The four groups are:
- Wilderness Group - includes Wilderness, Wilderness National Monument, and Nonwilderness National Monument
- Natural Setting Group - includes LUD II, Remote Recreation, Semi-Remote Recreation, Old-Growth Habitat, Municipal Watershed, Research Natural Area, Special Interest Area, and Wild, Scenic, and Recreational Rivers
- Development Group - includes Timber Production, Modified Landscape, Scenic Viewshed, and Experimental Forest
- Overlay Group - includes Minerals and Transportation/Utility Systems
Some LUDs can occupy the same acres, such as those in the Overlay LUD Group. However, when each acre is counted only towards the LUD with the highest protection level, the acreage in each LUD group is:
- Wilderness Group - 5.92 million acres (35% of the Tongass)
- Natural Setting Group - 7.41 million acres (44% of the Tongass)
- Development Group - 3.45 million acres (21% of the Tongass)
